South Africa's National Treasury will wait until the February 2027 Budget to announce the final design of its proposed national online gambling tax. The timetable appears in Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana's official medium-term budget statement delivered on October 21.
The announcement means the levy is still a policy proposal rather than a tax currently in force. Treasury said consultation continues over the design, its relationship with the existing regulatory framework and the consequences for provinces and the regulated market.
The starting point is a National Treasury discussion paper published in November 2025. It proposed a 20% national charge on gross revenue from online betting and interactive gambling, on top of provincial taxes. The document framed the measure primarily as a response to gambling growth and related social harm.
iGaming AFRIKA highlighted the new timetable on October 26. For operators and provincial authorities, the immediate position is unchanged while Treasury works through the remaining policy questions before the main budget.
