Virginia's historical horse racing venues operated by Churchill Downs recorded a combined 5.6% revenue decline in October. The statewide result masked gains at two properties and sharper falls around central Virginia.
CDC Gaming reported that The Rose in northern Virginia led the market with $15.2 million, up 5.7%. The Vinton branch of Rosie's increased 1.7% to $4.8 million.
The steepest declines came at properties within the wider catchment area of the Petersburg casino. Colonial Downs fell 18.1% to $3.5 million, Richmond-area Rosie's dropped 17.8% to $10.4 million and the Emporia venue declined 16.3% to $1.8 million.
The Virginia Racing Commission publishes revenue reporting for regulated racing and historical racing activity. October's split performance suggests newer competition is affecting some locations more heavily than the expanding northern Virginia market.
