Conceptual signing of a Maltese gaming consumer-protection cooperation agreement

The Malta Gaming Authority and the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority have signed a memorandum designed to improve cooperation on consumer affairs and player protection in the gaming sector. The MGA announced the agreement on October 23.

The framework covers consumer concerns, complaints and disputes that touch both authorities' mandates. It formalises communication and the exchange of relevant information while keeping that exchange subject to existing legal and regulatory requirements.

The practical aim is to identify which authority should handle an issue and give consumers clearer guidance. The agreement does not create a new compensation scheme or announce an enforcement case, but it sets a route for coordination when a complaint cannot be resolved within one regulator's remit alone.

The MCCAA also published the memorandum, describing it as a formal version of an already constructive relationship. Both authorities framed the move as a way to reduce gaps between gaming supervision and general consumer protection.
