Holland Casino has formally started construction of a permanent venue for Groningen, nine years after a fire destroyed its former city-centre casino. The new building is taking shape at Businesspark Ter Borch beside the A7 in the municipality of Tynaarlo.

The project will provide about 4,660 square metres of floor space. CasinoNieuws reports that the contractor expects to complete the structure in early 2028, while Holland Casino has so far named only 2028 as the intended opening year.

The operator selected the site in 2023 after a prolonged search for a permanent replacement. Groningen has relied on temporary premises at Sontplein since late 2018, following the 2017 fire at Gedempte Kattendiep. The new location keeps the Groningen name despite sitting just outside the city boundary.

The operator's announcement says the design draws on the reed landscape of nearby De Onlanden and puts emphasis on sustainability, accessibility and material reuse. The groundbreaking marks the start of the main build rather than an immediate reopening, with the temporary venue continuing during construction.
