Casinos Austria has appointed Andreas Bierwirth as its next director general and chairman of the management board of Austrian Lotteries. The company's succession announcement says he will take the two leadership roles on March 14, 2027.
Bierwirth will succeed Erwin van Lambaart, whose five-year contract expires in March. Van Lambaart told the supervisory board in September that he would not seek another term, prompting an international search led by an executive recruitment adviser. When the transition is complete, the management board will have two members, Bierwirth and Martin Skopek.
Bierwirth already knows the business from inside. Casinos Austria's management page says he joined the boards of Casinos Austria and Austrian Lotteries as chief transformation officer in October 2025. His earlier executive experience spans aviation, telecommunications and banking, giving the group a leader with a broader corporate-transformation background rather than a new external gambling-industry recruit.
The timing matters because Austria is preparing to re-award casino and lottery concessions. iGaming Business reports that the group currently holds all 12 land-based casino licences and that Austrian Lotteries operates the country's single lottery and online-gaming licence. Bierwirth will therefore inherit both an executive transition and a competitive licensing process central to the group's future domestic business.
