Buenos Aires policy debate over smartphone betting and youth safeguards

Buenos Aires City legislator Juan Facundo Del Gaiso has called for stronger controls on online betting advertising and payment methods. He argued that policy should address licensed-market exposure as well as illegal operators, with particular attention to adolescents.

In an interview reported by SBC Noticias, Del Gaiso said the spread of betting across smartphones had increased the risk of harmful behaviour and financial difficulty. He proposed restricting gambling promotion in media, social networks and sport.

The legislator also supported preventing the use of credit cards for betting. He acknowledged that Argentina's division of regulatory powers between jurisdictions complicates measures that would be easier to apply through a single national framework.

Del Gaiso criticised the lack of progress after Argentina's lower house approved a bill containing advertising restrictions and the debate later stalled in the Senate. His remarks reflect a continuing dispute over the role of sports sponsorship and public figures in promoting betting.

Buenos Aires City's legislative record shows that lawmakers have considered several child-gambling prevention and advertising proposals since 2024. Del Gaiso filed a renewed gambling-harm prevention programme in February 2026, giving the latest interview a documented policy background.
