MGM Osaka is moving deeper into construction on Yumeshima island as the partners behind Japan's first approved integrated resort work toward a late-2030 opening. In a new iGaming Business interview, MGM Japan president and chief executive Ed Bowers acknowledged both the economic opportunity and the public concern attached to opening the country's first casino resort.
MGM Resorts International and Orix Group are the principal investors in the project, whose current estimated cost is about ¥1.5 trillion. MGM's latest quarterly results continue to identify Osaka as a core part of the company's development pipeline.
The updated plan covers 49 hectares and approximately 780,000 square metres of floor space. It provides for 2,500 hotel rooms, large conference and exhibition facilities and a 3,500-seat theatre. The casino is limited to 3% of the total floor area, reflecting Japan's integrated-resort rules. Construction crews are also carrying out ground-stabilisation work on the reclaimed island.
The operating model includes entry controls for Japanese residents and coordination with Osaka on responsible-gambling measures. Bowers said the resort plans to connect its programme with the city's addiction-support framework, an area likely to shape public confidence in any future Japanese integrated resorts.
Focus Gaming News previously confirmed the leadership structure and 2030 timetable. The project rests on the national government's earlier certification of the Osaka development plan.
