What Spain’s joint gambling deposit limits mean for players

Spain has approved cross-operator online gambling deposit limits, with default daily, weekly and four-week thresholds managed by the DGOJ.

Spain has approved a system of joint deposit limits designed to measure a person’s online gambling deposits across all operators where they hold an account. The change moves away from a model in which each operator applied its limit separately.

Three default thresholds

According to the official DGOJ announcement, the general limits are EUR700 per day, EUR1,750 per week and EUR3,300 across four weeks. They are default thresholds. The regulator says a player may seek to change or remove them through a specific procedure that includes strengthened information about gambling-related risks.

One limit across operators

Under the earlier structure described by the regulator, limits were set independently at each operator. A person using several sites could therefore deposit more in total by spreading activity across accounts. The joint model instead applies a personal aggregate threshold across participating operators.

The DGOJ is responsible for the system and says its technology will coordinate the information required to verify limits in real time while avoiding unnecessary exchanges of personal data between operators.

October update keeps implementation current

At the Gaming in Spain Conference on 15 October, DGOJ officials again discussed implementation of the joint-limit system. That October update confirms that the measure remains part of Spain’s active player-protection agenda, but it does not provide a new universal activation date in the text.

Check current operator notices

Players should distinguish the approved framework from the settings currently displayed by a particular operator. Before relying on a threshold, check the operator’s current notices and the latest DGOJ guidance. Deposit limits are a harm-reduction tool, not a guarantee that gambling is affordable or safe for an individual.
